Summer - Fall 2024
We are excited to welcome Ross Ellwood, our OPS bioinformatician, Alissa Greene, our Master student, and Denise Romero, our undergrad volunteer!!!

""I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where I've spent most of my life. For my undergraduate studies, I attended the University of Colorado Boulder, majoring in biology and minoring in math. I’m currently pursuing my master's degree through the University of Oregon, which includes an internship portion that I am completing at the Nguyen Lab at the University of Florida. Some of the topics I enjoy most about bioinformatics are investigating structural variants, developing large-scale workflows and algorithms, and collaborating with others! Outside of the lab, you will often find me cycling, skiing, and fishing!"

""Hi! I’m Alissa! From being born and raised in Gainesville, FL, to moving to Suwannee, GA, then moving to Orlando, FL for high school and undergrad, I’ve finally step foot in my hometown once again!
In May of 2024, I received my B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a minor in Medical Sociology from the University of Central Florida. As of July 2024, I have been perusing my M.S. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology here at UF and within the Nguyen Lab.
Outside of the lab, I’m big on rest and relaxation. I love music, art, comics, dance, and watching movies. Most of all, I love to hang out with my friends and family!"

"I am Denise, an undergraduate student at the University of Florida majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Health Disparities in Society on the pre-MD/PhD track. I was born in Kileen, TX, and raised in Miami, FL. I have an interest in neuroscience research and, more specifically, Alzheimer's disease. I hope that in my time at UF, I can learn more about the genetic and molecular components of the disease and work towards developing improved preventative measures and potential cures. Outside of coursework, I love spending time with my family, weightlifting, running, and cooking!"

""I’m originally from Puerto Rico, where I earned my bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao. In June 2024, I completed a post-baccalaureate program at the University of Michigan, where I studied the role of repeat expansions in CANVAS (Cerebellar Ataxia, Neuropathy, and Vestibular Areflexia Syndrome). I am currently a Neuroscience PhD student at UF in the Nguyen Lab, where I focus on expanding our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying repeat expansions in Alzheimer's disease. In my free time, I enjoy taking walks with my dog, listening to music, and spending time with friends and family."
